Bloom is a culture and lifestyle magazine, with high-quality production values, exquisite graphic design and photography, and writing that is sharp, knowing, and entertaining.
Each issue contains thought-provoking, relevant editorial about the area's people, arts, culture, entertainment, homes, gardens, food, wine, health, fitness, and family life.
Bloom is an independent, free magazine whose target audience is the city's working and retired adult population and visitors to Bloomington. Published bimonthly, 14,000 copies are available at more than 180 local retail businesses, hotels, and community centers.
Malcolm Abrams
Editor and Publisher
Malcolm Abrams is a magazine consultant, writer, and editor who fell in love with Bloomington and moved here in 2005.
For the past nine years he had served as Editor in Chief of Spa Finder Magazine, transforming it from an annual catalogue into an award-winning, bimonthly magazine. While editing Spa Finder, he also worked as a consultant for a variety of other clients.
Those clients included The McGraw Hill Companies for whom he repositioned Architectural Record magazine. Malcolm spent 14 months at McGraw Hill, eight of them as the magazine's interim Editor in Chief. Architectural Record went on to win a National Magazine Award for editorial excellence.
Other clients Malcolm has worked with include The National Audubon Society (repositioning American Birds and serving as interim Editor in Chief of Audubon Magazine), Murdoch Magazines, Advanstar Communications, Kelly Communications, Family Media, Brioni, Global Finance Magazine, and Miller Freeman, Inc.
For nine years, he worked for Rupert Murdoch, first as Managing Editor of the Star and then as Vice President/Editorial Director of Murdoch Business Magazines. In this latter capacity, he was responsible for 20 publications, repositioning several of them, including Travel Weekly, Meetings & Conventions, and Business and Commercial Aviation. Malcolm also served for two years as Group Editorial Director for the Miller Freeman, Inc. Travel Group.
Viking Penguin published Malcolm's first book, Future Stuff, written with researcher Harriet Bernstein. It was sold for publication in Great Britain, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan. A television pilot based on the book was produced by Aaron Spelling Entertainment. A sequel, More Future Stuff, also was published by Viking Penguin.
Malcolm's work has appeared in many magazines and newspapers including Ladies' Home Journal, Playboy, Longevity, Parents, and The Toronto Globe & Mail. His work has been syndicated by both the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times syndicates.
Rod Eid
Associate Editor
Ron worked as a freelance writer and photographer for 15 years before joining Bloom Magazine as Associate Editor in October 2007.
After graduating from Indiana University in the early ’80s with a bachelor’s degree in marketing/advertising, Ron moved to Dallas to work for Campbell Taggart, Inc., a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch.
In 1991 he attended The University of Texas to study journalism. While earning a master’s degree, he was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and Kappa Tau Alpha National Journalism Honor Society.
As a freelancer in Chicago, Cleveland, and New York, Ron contributed to a variety of magazines and newspapers, covering education, sports, adventure travel, personal finance, and business.
Erin Kirchoffer
Associate Publisher
Prior to joining Bloom in June 2008, Erin worked for five years at Indiana University, first as Alumni Relations Coordinator for the School of Public and Environmental Affairs and then in the marketing department of the Jacobs School of Music.
Other positions Erin has held include Coordinator of Educational Programs and Special Events at the Indiana Museum of Art, Columbus Gallery, and Public Affairs Director of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra.
