4 4th of July Parade • 9 am-1 pm
Courthouse and downtown streets
Celebrate a classic Indiana 4th of July parade. The route runs down College Avenue and up Walnut Street, between 10th and 5th Streets. The Bloomington Community Band kicks off festivities at 9 am; the parade begins at 10 am. Bring your lawn chairs, wear sunblock and a floppy hat, stay hydrated, and enjoy an American summer ritual.

Visit galleries to see some of Bloomington’s best artwork and meet the artists. Participating galleries include the Waldron Arts Center, Wandering Turtle Art Gallery, Gallery North on the Square, Prima Gallery, By Hand, Bellevue, and tutto bène, but many other businesses participate with special programming. The 2008 Lotus Festival season kicks off with funky, Balkan-infl uenced brass from this ninepiece band from New York City. Free.

Comic theater from actress/writers Diane Kondrat and Karen Irwin, in a play they co-wrote with Eric Pfeffi nger. They’ll take it to the Indianapolis Fringe Festival in August—this is a one-night-only preview. Ticket information at 334-3100.

12 Summer Night of Lotus: Tracy Grammer and Dobet Gnahore • 7 pm

The second part of the Lotus Festival kickoff showcases an American singer, songwriter, and fiddler (Grammer), and a dynamic singer, dancer, and percussionist from Côte d’Ivoire (Gnahore). The IU Opera’s entry in the Summer Music Festival is Jerry Bock’s comedy of feuding shop clerks who are also unknowingly anonymous romantic pen pals (a story told in the 1940 film The Shop Around the Corner and more recently in You’ve Got Mail). $20, $12 for students.
