From April through November, farmers and vendors fill Showers Common with locally grown produce, annual and perennial plants, and freshly baked bread for the Saturday morning Market. Local musicians perform while thousands of people find their way among the corn and tomatoes, local dairy products, and warm scents of fresh herbs. The Market often feels like equal parts shopping, socializing, and treasure hunt. Come early so you can amble among friends as you seek out that dried lavender or fresh basil you have been dreaming about.

The Market is open every Saturday, April through September, from 8 am until 1 pm and Saturdays in October and November from 9 am until 1 pm The season ends with the Holiday Market on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, from 10 am – 3 pm.

About: Beginning this summer, Area 10 Agency on Aging will host the Ellettsville Farmers Market every Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon (June 7 through September 27). Area 10 is thrilled to provide a place for local farmers and neighbors to meet and connect in an easily accessible convenient location. Children will learn more about where their food comes from and families can purchase fresh, local produce and other farm produced goods. Area 10 is located at 631 W. Edgewood Dr. in Ellettsville next to Edgewood Jr. High School.
During market season, the Endwright Center’s hours will be extended to include Saturday mornings (8 am-noon). Patrons will have access to facilities and can come inside to cool off on a hot summer day or participate in scheduled classes and programs. Endwright Center members (only) will have access to the fitness equipment. Everyone is invited to stop at the Area 10 information table to learn about the wonderful services the agency provides to seniors, people with disabilities, their families and caregivers.
At the end of each market day, vendors are encouraged to donate unsold produce to the area 10 food pantry. Our food pantry provides over 500 bags of groceries each month to homebound seniors. Vendors may also compost excess produce scraps in the Area 10 Mustang Garden, a small teaching garden which also provides produce for the food pantry.
We encourage anyone interested in becoming a vendor, reserving an information table, serving as a volunteer, sponsor or supporter of the Ellettsville Farmers Market to contact us soon. The application deadline to reserve a vendor spot for the entire market season is May 2.

Monroe Lake is offering a 3 to 4-hour guided canoe/kayak trip on Saturday, August 2 at 8 a.m.

“Back-story in the Back-water” will focus on the lake’s fascinating cultural history. Participants will learn about some of the families that lived in the area pre-reservoir, how the land came to be a lake, and what remnants still remain of those earlier days.

The trip is limited to 10 people, ages 15 or over, who have intermediate or advanced paddling skills. Beginners may participate only if they are riding in a canoe with an experienced paddler, as no instruction will be provided.

The program fee is $10 per person. Those without their own canoe/kayak can rent one for an additional $35 fee, which includes life jacket(s) and boat delivery and pick-up.

Participants will meet at Pine Grove State Recreation Area, which is located off of State Road 446. Directions will be provided to those who register.

Join us this week as the Lilly Library’s summer exhibition, “Spiritualists, Sorcerers, and Stage Magicians: Magic and the Supernatural at the Lilly Library,” makes its debut. The exhibition will run from June 2 to August 30, with a special reception on Saturday, June 21 from 6:00-8:00 PM.

The exhibition showcases the Library’s wide-ranging and eclectic holdings on magic and the supernatural, from 17th-century treatises on witchcraft to modern-day comic books.

Stay tuned to the Lilly Library’s blog and website for details about upcoming special events and blog posts throughout the summer highlighting items in Lilly’s collection such as discussion of spiritualism in the correspondence of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, the Lilly’s recently-acquired issues of the pulp magazine Weird Tales, and annotated editions of books by the self-styled black magician Aleister Crowley.

Nano: Small Science, Big Fun
Explore the science of the very, very small! The interactive science exhibition brings to life nanoscale phenomena in nature, as well as nano technology and products. Some of the exhibition experiences are part of a national touring collection, which is making its first appearance in Indiana at WonderLab.

Nano Art
An exhibition of fourteen images that show the compelling beauty of biological and physical structures on the nano- and micro-size scale. WonderLab visitors will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite image for the People’s Choice Award.

“Living in Color”
Local artist, Avi Katz, has taken historic photos of Bloomington and turned them into colorized, painted, masterpieces. Runs through September 6.

“Auto Indiana”
From Elwood Haynes’s early machine to today’s numerous parts manufacturers, this exhibition examines the role of the automobile in the Hoosier State. Indiana was one of the leaders in automobile production until the 1930’s when Detroit emerged as the nation’s technological and industrial giant. Come see the Howe car, Monroe County’s first automobile, graciously on loan from the Mathers Museum of World Cultures. Runs through December 31.

The History Center is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10am-4pm.

”The content of color paints our days and nights. We prefer certain colors and color combinations, Colors have dispositions indicative of regions, origins, harmonics.” The 32 pieces of fine contemporary art, created by Martha Kaplan, are from three different series. The ‘New Kachinas’ are graphite and colored pencils and are a leap of faith from the side of the mind that is new territory. ‘Large Lace Paperworks’ are mixed media drawings setting out to restructure the disparities of the burdens of the world and ‘Pastels’ are the bridge where conscious and unconscious space can meet.

About Jeanne McLeish:
Jeanne McLeish was born in Clinton, Indiana in 1951. Jeanne began painting in 1970. Working in both watercolor and oil, she creates images that reflect her deep love of nature as well as her fascination with color and light.

Her paintings have been included in numerous annual exhibitions including the Hoosier Salon, Indiana Heritage Arts, Watercolor Society of Indiana, Indiana Artists Club, Wabash Valley Exhibition, Realism Today, and the transparent Watercolor Society of America. Awards include Best of Show in both the Watercolor Society of Indiana 2004 and the Indiana Artists Club Annual 2009.

Jeanne began teaching watercolor classes in 1977. She was an instructor at the Indianapolis Art Center between 1985 and 1990 and currently teaches ongoing watercolor classes at MAP in Mooresville, Indiana. She often teaches outdoor workshops that focus on the challenges of plein air painting. During the summer of 2011, Jeanne served as the National Park Service’s artist in residence at the Indiana Dunes National Lake Shore Park (along with Mark Burkett).

She is a Signature Member of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, a Cardinal Fellow of the Watercolor Society of America, and Jeanne is also a member of the Indiana Artists Club, the Hoosier Salon Patron’s Association, the Indiana Heritage Arts, and the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association.

Her artwork can be found in many private and public collections, including the Tippecanoe Courthouse permanent collection (Lafayette, IN), the Rose Hulman Institute of Technology (Terre Haute, IN), the Swope Museum of Art (Terre Haute, IN), St. Francis Hospital (Mooresville, IN) and in the Indiana Govenor’s Residence Collection and the Indiana State Museum’s permanent collection (Indpls, IN). Jeanne McLeish has been an artist member of the Brown County Art Guild since 1979.

About Dan Woodson:
Dan Woodson conceived and started the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association in 1998. Also that year, he conceived and was a part of the Painting Indiana Project. Since that time, he has worked with three other states to do similar projects. He founded the new Richmond Art Group in 2011.

His numerous awards and recognition include: Best Landscape, Best Impressionistic Landscape, Best Traditional Oil, and others from the Hoosier Salon; two Best of Shows, Award of Excellence, Memorial and Merit Awards, in addition to Purchase and Popular Awards from Indiana Heritage Arts; Best of Show, First Place, Memorial and Purchase Awards from the Richmond Arts Museum; two paintings placed in top 200 out of 1,760 entries from the National Art for the Parks; eight First Place Awards, two Second Place Awards, three Popular Awards from the T.C. Steele Competition; and First Place from the James River National Competition.

Dan’s artwork has been in galleries all over the United States in past years; he is still with Sigman’s Gallery of Fine Arts (Indianapolis, IN), and has been a member artist of the Brown County Art Guild since spring of 2013.

Artist’s Statement: I have never been interested in recording my awards. I have over one hundred ribbons and unless it is marked on the ribbon, I have no idea where I won most of them. I’m self-trained but have learned my craft from all Indiana artists and have juried shows in Indiana and Ohio.
