Want to take a peek into the past? Then you should definitely head over to Paynetown SRA for their annual Heritage Days, scheduled for Friday, July 11 through Sunday, July 13.

The highlight of the event is a Heritage Village, where reenactors portray time periods from 1745 to the 1890s. As you wander through their camps, you can see history brought alive… you might see a craftsman twisting a rope, try your hand at throwing a tomahawk, or step inside a trader’s tent.

Monroe Lake’s interpretive staff is also offering lots of hands-on traditional craft programs throughout the weekend. On Friday, you can make a straw ornament, painted glass jar, and a yarn doll. Saturday offers a leather tooling session, mini bow and arrows craft, and a pioneer cooking demo. Programs wrap up on Sunday with herbal sachets and a punched “tin” craft.

Kinsey Institute Art Exhibits: “Creative Minds” and “Artistic Types: Test in Visual Art”

April 14 through September 12, 2014, Monday-Friday, 8AM-12PM and 1PM-5PM

Creative Minds features work produced by artists whose primary professions are as sex researchers, physicians, or scientists. This exhibition in the main gallery features drawings, glass art, photographs, sculpture and video by Robert Latou Dickinson, John Money, Jeffrey Rothenberg, Andreas Schneider, Jill Bolte Taylor, David Teplica, Leonore Tiefer and Rachel Liebert, and Martin Weinberg.
On display in the Corridor Gallery is Artistic Types: Text in Visual Art. This show offers a selection of artworks in which words or the alphabet play a significant role in the composition. The exhibition features a wide range of media, from vintage photographs to contemporary pieces by Herbert Ascherman, Michael Bennett, Filiz Cicek, Gatis Cirulis, John Gutoskey, Joe De Hoyos, Linda Hesh, Paul McCormick, James Murray, and Mark Addison Smith.

The Kinsey Institute Gallery is open 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm weekdays or by appointment Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to Noon. Admission is free. Create fabulous and exciting works of art in the style of the greatest artists, explore the history of art from around the world, and discover and celebrate your own artistic style using 2D and 3D media such as paint, pencil, and ceramics. Participants may register for morning, afternoon, or both sessions. Join us this week as the Lilly Library’s summer exhibition, “Spiritualists, Sorcerers, and Stage Magicians: Magic and the Supernatural at the Lilly Library,” makes its debut. The exhibition will run from June 2 to August 30, with a special reception on Saturday, June 21 from 6:00-8:00 PM.

The exhibition showcases the Library’s wide-ranging and eclectic holdings on magic and the supernatural, from 17th-century treatises on witchcraft to modern-day comic books.

Stay tuned to the Lilly Library’s blog and website for details about upcoming special events and blog posts throughout the summer highlighting items in Lilly’s collection such as discussion of spiritualism in the correspondence of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, the Lilly’s recently-acquired issues of the pulp magazine Weird Tales, and annotated editions of books by the self-styled black magician Aleister Crowley.

Nano: Small Science, Big Fun
Explore the science of the very, very small! The interactive science exhibition brings to life nanoscale phenomena in nature, as well as nano technology and products. Some of the exhibition experiences are part of a national touring collection, which is making its first appearance in Indiana at WonderLab.

Nano Art
An exhibition of fourteen images that show the compelling beauty of biological and physical structures on the nano- and micro-size scale. WonderLab visitors will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite image for the People’s Choice Award.

“Cracking the Code: Quilt Pattern Meanings”
In the past many thought that Quilts made during the mid-to late part of the 19th century were created to aid travelers on the Underground Railroad. Now, research shows that there is no documentation regarding quilt patterns as a form of communication for Underground Railroad Travelers. This exhibit will examine different patterns and their purported meanings. The show and exhibit are on the bus route and FREE with IHQS wristband or hand stamp,during quilt show only. Runs through August 1.

“Living in Color”
Local artist, Avi Katz, has taken historic photos of Bloomington and turned them into colorized, painted, masterpieces. Runs through September 6.

Community Voices Gallery: “Monroe County United Ministries”
The Community Voices Gallery gives local organizations the opportunity to tell their story. Monroe County United Ministries is a a nurturing organization serving working families and those in distress by assisting those with emergency needs and subsidized childcare. We provide quality education and a safe place for children, basic needs assistance for the poor and community service opportunities. Runs through July 31.

“Auto Indiana”
From Elwood Haynes’s early machine to today’s numerous parts manufacturers, this exhibition examines the role of the automobile in the Hoosier State. Indiana was one of the leaders in automobile production until the 1930’s when Detroit emerged as the nation’s technological and industrial giant. Come see the Howe car, Monroe County’s first automobile, graciously on loan from the Mathers Museum of World Cultures. Runs through December 31.

The Bellevue Group is pleased to present Awake To A Dream, a solo exhibition of new work by Lena Burkett.

Burkett is a native of southern Indiana and has considered Bloomington her home since 2001. Her art is informed by her interest in world myth and religions and the intertwining of culture, history, music and poetry. She has a true passion for painting. Her paintings strive to create an imaginary world of forms on top of the real world. She has said about the exhibition that she is pleased and excited to share her work with the community that she has grown to love and hopes that they enjoy viewing them as much as she has enjoyed creating them.

Exhibit runs until the end of July. Operating hours are 10 am – 3 pm Wednesday-Sunday.

School House Rock Live! directed by 2014 IU M.F.A. Directing graduate Lee Cromwell (Guys and Dolls and God of Carnage at IU Theatre, among many other Bloomington directing credits) with musical direction by B.F.A. Musical Theatre major Nat Zegree. Playing in the intimate Studio Theatre, favorite songs and tuneful lessons from the Emmy-winning 1970s television show Schoolhouse Rock such as “Conjunction Junction” and “Just a Bill” will be brought to life on the stage.

The show runs June 21, 24-28, July 1, 2, 3, and 5 @ 11:00 am, and July 7-12 @ 11:00 am & 2:00 pm.

Appropriate for ages 3 and up. Ages 7 & under should be accompanied by an adult.
