Limestone Symposium: Carve-by-the-day

Beginning instruction in hand carving, work at your own pace. One or more days, pay as you go. Workshops are 9am – noon Monday-Friday. Participants may continue working independently through the afternoon. Participants must bring safety glasses and wear sturdy shoes, no sandals or flip-flops are permitted.

Included: Tools and 2 cubic feet of stone (approximately 300 pounds)

$50 per day, $200 per five-day week. Runs June 4-8, 11-15, and 18-22.

Limestone Symposium, Session I

The first session of the Limestone Symposium runs from June 3 through 9. Each session consists of seven days of immersive instruction carving limestone, including design, moving stone, splitting blocks, roughing out, using hand and pneumatic tools, lettering, and much more. Different guest instructors are featured each session. For beginners an introduction to using basic tools, roughing out, and working from a maquette or drawing is given on the first day. Techniques for carving and basic principles of sculpting are covered on day two. Tools are not provided.

Included in Sessions I and II:
Up to 8 cubic feet of limestone per session (approximately 1200 pounds), compressed air, electricity, water, and forklift. Continental breakfast, lunch, and snacks. One Limestone Symposium t-shirt.

“Collage” exibit at the Blueline Gallery

This exhibit at the Blueline Gallery includes a number of two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of art by Virginia Patrick, Paul Smedberg, John Terrill, and Roast Hoggmann. The exhibit will run during regular gallery hours until June 23. Free and open to the public.

The 72nd Indiana University Writers’ Conference

Held June 3 to 8 on the Bloomington campus, the Indiana University Writers’ Conference is a weeklong festival of readings, classes and workshops.

Workshops include “Writing the Unthinkable” with fiction writer and cartoonist Lynda Barry, which details the method she’s used for more than 30 years to write stories by hand; a fiction workshop with author Jean Thompson; and a poetry workshop by Florida State University associate professor Erin Belieu; as well as classes in journal-making and mystery writing.

Space is still available for all workshops and classes. The cost to attend a workshop plus all of the classes is $550 for the week; the classes-only fee is $300. For IU students, the cost is $100 for classes only. See website for full schedule and to register online.

Turf Tiger/Little Kicker/JUNIORS Soccer Camp

Join us for another exciting week of soccer camp, Monday-Friday, June 4-8, 2012! Bloomington Soccer’s half-day camp is perfect for players ages 5-12 and will be held under the bright sunshine – outside – at Karst Farm Park.

Every player receives a new soccer ball (new this year) and t-shirt for the week, plus instruction from our Bloomington Soccer staff coaches. There’ll be plenty of games and activities each day – a broad extension of our Turf Tiger/Little Kicker and JUNIORS indoor programs.

Camp meets from 9:15am-11:45am. Players will be divided into groups based on age, maturity and skill, but generally in the 5-6 yr, 7-8 yr and 9-12 yr old groups.
