Jewish Theatre of Bloomington: Sonia Flew

02:00 pm to 04:00 pm
Ivy Tech Waldron Arts Center, 122 S. Walnut
http://www.jewishtheatrebloomington.org

Cuban born Sonia is sent to the United States by her parents to elude the rising intensity of the Communist revolution in Cuba in the early 1960’s. She never sees her parents again. Years later, she marries a Jewish man, they settle in the Midwest, bring up two children, and attempt to blend their customs from their separate backgrounds.

When Sonia learns of her son’s decision to leave college, enlist in the military and fight against terror in Afghanistan in the weeks following 9/11, memories of her own childhood overwhelm her. She struggles to reconcile being forced as a young girl to leave Cuba at the dawn of Fidel Castro’s rule with her own responsibilities as a mother facing uncertainty. Sonia must find a way to come to terms with her past, her lost parents, her own children and her adopted country—or risk losing everything that she loves. Set between post-revolutionary Cuba and post-9/11 America, Sonia Flew telescopes the large cultural and political forces of a historic moment to examine their impact on the intimate lives of ordinary men and women.

Directed by Martha Jacobs.

A Collection of Tasty Musical Morsels

04:00 pm to 06:00 pm
Rachael's Cafe, 300 E Third St.

Early Music Associates, Inc (EMA) is pleased to announce that the Bloomington Early Music Festival will emerge this year with a series concerts and community activities from Tuesday, May 20 to Sunday, May 25. All events will take place in downtown Bloomington and are free and open to the public.
The ‘pop-up’ festival celebrates the abundant talent of Jacobs School students and members of the Bloomington community and is the first project of a recently reorganized not-for-profit (EMA) that nurtures the growth of early music performance in the region throughout the year.

“We’re thrilled to see the Bloomington Early Music Festival return to its roots through a partnership with Gamma Ut, the student wing of the Early Music Institute,” said Leela Breithaupt, board member of Early Music Associates. “This is a wonderful opportunity to bring together talented musicians specializing in Medieval and Baroque music with the Bloomington community in an energetic, fun-filled celebration that combines old music with new avenues of performance.”

Partnering with the festival are a number of community groups and venues, including Classical Revolution Bloomington, the Jacobs School of Music’s Project Jumpstart and Early Music Institute, the First Presbyterian Church’s new concert series, the Runcible Spoon, the City of Bloomington’s Saturday Morning Farmer’s Market, the Monroe County Courthouse, and the Mathers Museum.
