Wake Up! With United Way “The Work Ahead: United Way’s Advocacy Agenda 2020”

07:45 am to 09:00 am
The Mill, 642 N Madison St, Bloomington, IN 47404
https://www.monroeunitedway.org/WakeUp

Monthly speaker series featuring breakfast, networking, and an enlightening presentation and discussion of timely topics that directly or indirectly affect everyone in our area.

United Way fights for the Health, Education, and Financial Stability of every person in our community. As the second largest funder of human services (next to government), we recognize that policies at the local, state, and federal level have direct implications for the services we support and the lives of each and every one of us, including our most vulnerable community members.

With 1 in 3 households in Monroe County defined as “ALICE” – Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, but Employed – and struggling to make ends meet, while an additional 1 in 5 families lives in federally-defined poverty, collective advocacy at the state level is a critical piece of the puzzle when discussing lasting and meaningful change.

Interested in learning more about our statewide advocacy priorities for the year ahead and how you can join in making a difference?

We’ll be joined by Kathryn Habecker, Impact & Advocacy Manager of Indiana United Ways, to learn about upcoming state and federal opportunities for engagement and collective impact. Kathryn engages and guides United Way agencies through community impact work, outcomes measurement, and public policy. Designing and leading engagement of local United Ways at the Statehouse, working year-round with legislators and key community stakeholders in home districts, and targeting activism on priority issues, Kathryn manages the public policy initiatives around the state and advocates for policies that provide stability, encourage upward economic mobility, and expand access to healthy, safe, and thriving communities for all Hoosiers. We’re delighted to welcome her to Monroe County on October 10th!

Alongside friends, neighbors, nonprofits and community partners, learn more about issues that directly or indirectly affect everyone in our area. Attendees will have the opportunity to deepen their awareness about someone else’s reality while learning about the challenges, innovations, collaborations, resources available through area nonprofits, and how to get more involved in making a difference.

In addition, we’ll examine a couple of key events in the history of games, such as the Great Video Crash of 1983 and the 1993 U.S. Senate hearings, and discuss how these events shaped the industry. Anders Osborne Benefit Concert for Amethyst House

07:30 pm to 10:00 pm
Buskirk Chumley Theater
http://bctboxoffice.org/event/an-evening-with-anders-osborne-solo/

Amethyst House is excited to present “An Evening with Anders Osborne” for our 7th Annual Benefit Concert. Local favorite Jason Ricci will open the show.

Purchase a VIP ticket and get front-of-house seating as well as admission to the VIP reception at 6:30pm before the show.

Osborne’s six-string virtuosity, inventive musicality, and poetic songcraft underpin an ever-expanding three-decade catalog celebrated by fans and critics alike. As a sought-after studio talent, his writing resounds through Keb Mo’s GRAMMY® Award-winning Slow Down, Tim McGraw’s number one “Watch The Wind Blow By,” and covers by Brad Paisley, Jonny Lang, Edwin McCain, Aaron Neville, and more. His output live and in the studio spans working with everyone from Eric Church, Toots and the Maytals, and John Scofield to The Meters, North Mississippi Allstars, and Galactic. His extensive touring history encompasses gigs, collaborations, and performances alongside everyone from Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, and Stanton Moore to The Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh and Jackie Greene. Not to mention, he lights up the screen on an episode of the HBO hit Treme. Plus, he has garnered acclaim from USA Today, Guitar Player, Relix, Offbeat, and more.

He also gives back whenever possible via the “Send Me A Friend” foundation and through writing music for New Orleans Children’s Museum. A pair of 2016 albums—Spacedust & Ocean Views and Flowerbox—maintained his prolific output at a record pace. Now, 2019’s Buddha and the Blues references the full scope of the creative and personal duality at the heart of everything this maverick does.

All proceeds will benefit Amethyst House. Amethyst House is a not-for-profit United Way agency based in Bloomington, IN that provides residential and outpatient services for those recovering from substance use disorders. The mission of Amethyst House is to provide a foundation for sober living by partnering with individuals, families, and communities impacted by addictions and substance abuse issues, offering quality recovery services and guidance for clean, sober, and healthy living.

Doors will open at 7:00 for this reserved seating event. The show is expected to last 2.5 hours.

Thursday, October 10, 2019 at 7:30 pm.
