But for some families, the cost of purchasing and maintaining an instrument can prevent their children from participating in music lessons and developing musical skills. To help, the BSO created the Children’s Instrument Recovery Program (ChIRP). “We want music to be accessible to those who, for various reasons, cannot get instruments on their own,” says bassist Audrey Williams, president of the BSO board of directors and director of ChIRP. BY CARMEN SIERING Oscar Gonzalez is the unit director for the Ellettsville branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bloomington, but when he talks about what his organization does and what it values, he could be speaking for many nonprofits. The focus is on clients. Many of the kids who come to the Boys & Girls Clubs are from low-income and single-parent homes. “We offer our kids a myriad of opportunities each month,” he says. “We bring in presenters to teach healthy lifestyle habits; we have dance groups; we discuss literacy and finance and careers. This year, Arthur Murray Dance Studio‘s Dancing With the Celebrities raised almost $130,000 for nonprofits Pinnacle School, the Monroe County Chapter of the American Red Cross, Cardinal Stage Company’s Education Initiative, My Sister’s Closet, Boys and Girls Clubs of Bloomington, and Pets Alive. The local celebrities who participated in the seventh annual dance contest were Russell Moss, co-owner of Golden Ticket Productions; Karin Drummond, of Drummond Chiropractic; Michael Korus, broker and owner of Maxim Real Estate; Rhonda Sharp, owner of Blayza; Jason Bell, manager at The Vacuum Center; and Ingrid Skoog, owner of Art of Connection. Arthur Murray Dance Studio‘s seventh annual Dancing With the Celebrities will take place on Saturday, May 18, at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. The five “celebrities” in this year’s dance contest are Russell Moss, co-owner of Golden Ticket Productions; Karin Drummond, of Drummond Chiropractic; Michael Korus, broker and owner of Maxim Real Estate; Rhonda Sharp, owner of Bayza; Jason Bell, manager at The Vacuum Center; and Ingrid Skoog, owner of Art of Connection. Over the past six years, Dancing With the Celebrities has raised more than $600,000 for various organizations in the Bloomington community. O’Child Boutique held a Fall Fashion Show on September 30 in the Fountain Square Ballroom. Local children, ranging from infants to preteens, showcased the many clothing options the children’s boutique has to offer. The event was a fundraiser for Bloom‘s Front Page Challenge, in benefit of United Way of Monroe County‘s member agency Boys and Girls Clubs of Bloomington.
