A portion of Elm Street between 7th and 8th streets was renamed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street for a brief time Tuesday, April 4, when Bloomington mayor John Hamilton opened an evening of activities and remembrance honoring the Civil Rights leader on the 49th anniversary of his assassination.

A small but enthusiastic crowd participated in the events held at Banneker Community Center and sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission. In one room, volunteers and commission members read stories about King and other Civil Rights and African American leaders, while across the hall a timeline was constructed for participants to plot highlights in their lives alongside some from King’s.

Upstairs, students from the Indiana University Groups Scholars Program led a group discussion on making a difference in the world, followed by related arts and crafts activities.
