12th Annual Bloomington Polar Bear Plunge

This year will marks the 12th Annual Plunge … January 1st at 11:00AM at Fairfax Beach near Four Winds Resort in Bloomington. It’s a plunge into the frigid waters of Lake Monroe – and a seriously fun time for all !!

The 2016 Polar Bear Plunge is a free event — everyone is welcome! Certificates of Achievement will be awarded to all registered participants. This year’s theme is ugly sweaters.

T-shirts commemorating the event will be available at the event. All proceeds from the t-shirt sales go to the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network.

Jammin’ Java Coffeehouse at Unitarian Universalist Church

Nine area groups or individual musicians will be performing everything from jazz and blues to folk, classical and tuba music at the Jammin’ Java Coffeehouse, a benefit event for Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County. The public is welcome to this event, hosted by the UU Habitat Task Force, in Fellowship Hall of the Unitarian Universalist Church. Performers will be the Hungry Five, Dan Lodge-Rigal, Travis Puntarelli, Keaton Springfield and Eric Bowling, King Bee and the Stingers, The Wisely Quartet, Heartland String Band, Ed Robbins & Julie Lawson, and J.C. Clements and Jason Blankenship. Finger foods and non-alcoholic drinks will be served. Come to enjoy great music and good company for a worthy cause!

Join Monroe County NOW for our October Chapter meeting on Sunday, October 20, from 3 to 5pm! This month’s meeting will include a service project to benefit the Shalom Community Center.

Our service project will include collecting feminine hygiene products and packaging them for use by Shalom patrons. Please bring donations to the meeting and we will package them while socializing. Products needed are as follows:

* tampons
* feminine wipes
* panty liners
* underwear

Also hear from our committees to see what we’re up to and learn how you can join and volunteer. Our meeting will be at Switchyard Brewing Company, located at 419 N. Walnut St.

Learn about The RISE!’s Youth Empowerment Services and Early Prevention Programs—two ways Middle Way House helps youth develop resilience and build healthy relationships. Gain understanding of what it is like to be a kid impacted by domestic violence and how our services help support and empower youth through their experience of trauma. Experience first-hand how lives are transformed by social-emotional learning, guided by Middle Way House’s Youth Program Director Priscilla Cuevas and other experts. Guests are encouraged to arrive promptly at 11 AM. We will begin the meal and program immediately. You’re sure to be edified and inspired! You won’t want to miss a minute. Bid in our silent auction for a week at a Cocoa Beach condo and other prizes! Proceeds from the luncheon help fund a new computer lab for our youth!

20th annual Jill Behrman 5K IU Color the Campus Walk/Run

Jill Behrman was an IU student and an employee of Recreational Sports. In May 2000, Jill left for a solo bike ride and never came back. Three years later, it was discovered that she had been murdered. In October 2000, the JB5K was created to keep the memory of Jill alive and to bring awareness to issues of violence in our community. Proceeds from the JB5K IU Color the Campus Walk/Run benefit the Jill Behrman Emerging Leader Scholarship, personal safety workshops and other Recreational Sports programs on campus throughout the year. The JB5K is a non-competitive walk/run through the Indiana University campus with photo opportunities and entertainment along the way.
The JB5K begins and ends at the Student Recreational Sports Center.
Onsite registration on the day of the event starts at 9:30AM in the SRSC Lobby, with the walk/run beginning at 11:00AM. Warm-ups begin at 10:00AM; food, dancing and more color follow the walk/run.
IU parking is NOT ticketed during this event.
Bursar billing is available for current IU students.
The color powder consists of eco-friendly cornstarch and food grade coloring.
Open to the community; children and pets are NOT allowed.
