Ellen Starr Lyon’s portraits are largely of family members depicted smack in the middle of their daily lives. The result is both emotional and intimate.

“I want them to do things they would naturally do,” she says, pointing out paintings of daughter Odessa with earbuds, son Finnian playing on his cell phone, and husband Art lifting a spoonful of food on one of their date nights. She also paints herself.

“My roles are ever changing, and I use self-portraiture to reflect that,” she says. “During this time of constant change and fear of the unknown, I find myself looking more and more inward to make sense of the world.”

Lyon is a member of PoetsArtists, Hoosier Salon, Indiana Artists, and Juniper Gallery.
