After a year of neglected haircuts and colors, Bloomingtonians have been returning to their local salons ready to change things up.

Bridgett DiVohl, who with her wife, Steph, owns Royale Hair Parlor on the downtown Square, says curtain bangs, undercuts, and colorful ‘dos are current local trends. “We do a ton of fashion shades including blue, purple, pink, and rainbow, and that trend evolves and continues to grow,” says DiVohl.

Alison McGlothlin, owner of Elan Salon in Fountain Square Mall, says lived-in color trends like root smudges, balayage, and grey blending have been popular as customers seek to adopt lower-maintenance color routines after quarantine.

Modern shags and mullets have also been highly requested this summer, says Elizabeth Robinson, owner of Senoj Salon. “We would describe this as going back to the ’80s’ style with big waves,” she says. “Shags and curls are coming back.”
