Guided Tours of Balancing Act: Christyl Boger and Of Bodies and Borders: Ana Teresa Fernández

02:00 pm to 04:00 pm
Grunwald Gallery of Art
https://soaad.indiana.edu/creative-activity/grunwald-gallery/exhibitions/upcoming/2018-08-24-out-of-easy-reach.html

Guides will take you on a tour of the Grunwald Gallery’s current exhibition Balancing Act: Christyl Boger and Of Bodies and Borders: Ana Teresa Fernández. Learn about one or both exhibitions from Eskenazi Museum of Art guides who will offer insight into the artists’ processes and concepts. Tours will take place starting at 2pm every Saturday while the exhibitions are on view. Join us anytime between 2 and 4pm to start a tour.

Balancing Act: Christyl Boger contains works from the artist’s renowned career. Christyl Boger was interested in the balancing act of the human animal caught between impulse and control, individual versus group, and the “fragile, vulnerable veneer” of our shared cultural behavior. Her work exists at the confluence of high and low art, of traditional figurative sculpture and domestic decorative figurines. The figures are caught between irreverent display and self-conscious concealment, shifting between vulnerable and suggestive states of being. Though she referenced non-ceramic elements such as public statuary and contemporary inflatable beach toys, Boger stated that her material “stays true to the language of ceramic figurines…the material of clay itself is inseparable from the ideas of fragility and artifice.”

Of Bodies and Borders: Ana Teresa Fernández is an exhibit organized by Gallery Wendi Norris and previously shown in Miami, FL. Consisting of oil paintings, drawings, a sculpture installation and two videos, Of Bodies and Borders seeks to refocus our attention on the plight of immigrants crossing one of the deadliest borders in the world, the Central Mediterranean route from Tunisia, Libya and Egypt. In a performance filmed off of the island of Poros, Greece, the artist weighed down, wrestles with a bed sheet beneath the blue waters. The oil paintings document this performance in layers of paint and depict the artist struggling, submerged in the abyss.
