‘Together in Peace’ Timothy Reed’s Epic New Single (Video)

Reed

BY JEREMY SHERE Those familiar with the languid, largely instrumental music of local composer and performer Timothy Reed may be surprised by the pianist’s latest single, “Together in Peace.” Beginning with a tuneful melody sung by vocalist Ariel Simpson over a simple, leisurely chord progression, the song soon shifts into high gear, featuring jazzy harmonies, complex call-and-response lyrics, and even a beatbox interlude. At nearly seven minutes long, “Together in Peace” is, in Reed’s words, an “intergalactic epic tour-de-force of a song” that would be at home on an album by arena rockers Pink Floyd or Queen. “It’s an extremely hard song to perform live, with six-part harmonies and all the different sections in various tempos,” says Reed, who besides [...]

No joke! B-town Is Getting Its Very Own Comedy Festival

Comedy

BY JEREMY SHERE So a comedian and a comedy club owner walk into a bar…. That may sound like the opening of a bad joke, but a comedy festival planned and co-directed by local comic Mat Alano-Martin and Jared Thompson, co-owner of The Comedy Attic, is no jest. The Limestone Comedy Festival, set to debut June 6-8, will be the first of its kind in Bloomington and, the founders hope, one of the best comedy festivals anywhere. “Lots of festivals have so much happening at the same time that people are forced to make hard choices about which shows they want to see, which can get really stressful,” says Alano-Martin, who has toured with comedy superstar Ralphie May and other [...]

Pictura Turns 5: A Little Midwest Gallery Attracting Top Talent (Photo Gallery)

Pictura

BY JEREMY SHERE Five years ago, Pictura Gallery opened for business on the corner of West 6th Street and North College with the goal of bringing fine art photography to the Midwest. Today, Pictura has succeeded not only in introducing Bloomington and surrounding areas to the latest in avant-garde photography but also in establishing itself as an up-and-coming gallery on the national scene. “That’s been surprising,” says co-owner Martha Moore, who runs the gallery with her husband, David. “We thought we were just going to be the little gallery on the corner.” The idea for opening a gallery began with David, an amateur photographer with an interest in art photography, who’d been harboring a desire to bring to Bloomington what [...]

Local Churches and Synagogue Win Grant to Install Solar Panels

solar panels

BY JEREMY SHERE For the past few years, the faith-based environmental organization Hoosier Interfaith Power and Light (H-IPL) has been combating climate change by encouraging its member congregations to use less fossil-fuel-derived energy and encourage their members to do the same. Now, with the aid of a $150,000 grant from the Indiana Office of Energy Development (one of only five awarded to 58 applicants), six H-IPL congregations in Bloomington and Indianapolis will go one step further by installing electricity-producing solar panels. “[Getting the grant] is extremely exciting because it’s a product of Indiana congregations from across the religious spectrum coming together to help curb climate change,” says Madeline Hirschland, vice chair of H-IPL and manager of the solar grant. “Our [...]

The Artistry of Chris Dadds: Builder of Slot Car Tracks

Chris Dadds

BY JEREMY SHERE Local carpenter and general contractor Chris Dadds specializes in what he calls “work with an emphasis on the strange and unusual.” Among Dadd’s many projects—including bathroom and kitchen remodeling, garden structures, and energy-efficiency upgrades—none is more unusual than his longtime passion: building slot car tracks. “They are pretty much incredibly large pieces of furniture upon which grown men race toy cars,” says Dadds, 58, who has been building tracks since the late 1980s and is one of the foremost track builders in America. At around 21 feet across and 50 feet from end to end, the average slot car track is indeed large. Or, as Dadds puts it, “not something you typically find slid underneath the bed.” [...]
