‘Tipping the Sacred Cow’ Exhibit

10:00 am to 05:30 pm on Jul 1
By Hand Gallery

Recently Dee Schaad has concentrated on earthenware. The pieces are all one-of-a-kind, tongue in cheek, figurative pieces based on history, myth and current events. Many have a story to go with the piece. They are made of white earthenware, stained and detailed with colored englobes and glazes. They are then fired to 1850 F. They are again fired with metallic lusters. All are fired multiple times and some are fired as many as five times. These pieces take many hours to complete. Most of the individual figures are designed and ready to hang on the wall. Others are vessel formatted and may be functional, but most are decorative and not very practical. He thinks of them as reliquaries for personal relics.

Dee Schaad’s work is included in numerous private, corporate and public collections. His ceramics have been shown in exhibitions regionally and nationally. Thirty of his ceramic figures from the series “Pilgrims on the Way to Canterbury”, were recently on display as part of the Art at the Indianapolis International Airport. His ceramics have also won numerous merit and purchase awards and have appeared in a variety of publications. Articles written by him have appeared in “Pottery Making Illustrated” and in Ceramic Sculpture and Studio Ceramics, both books, publications of the American Ceramic Society.

At The Venue for Gallery Walk, Encore: Bones of the Earth: Stone Carvings by Sidney Bolan, plus Paintings, Drawings and Pastels, by Mark Blaney, a Thinking Person’s Artist

05:00 pm to 08:00 pm
The Venue Fine Art & Gifts
http://www.thevenuebloomington.com

On Friday, June 2nd, beginning at 5:00p.m., The Venue is pleased to host an encore exhibition of relief limestone carvings by Sidney Bolan, and oil paintings, drawings and pastels by Mark Blaney.
Sidney Bolan creates limestone carvings, inspired by nature. Her pieces range in size and complexity from simple carved stones to ornate and intricate scenes. All are practically portable, without a truck or crane. They range in price from $50-800. This is a time when you can give yourself, or someone else, a beautiful piece of art that is literally drawn from the heart of Bloomington.
Do not hesitate. In May The Venue has sold more of Sidney’s carvings than ever before, and she has worked non-stop to replenish our supply, thus allowing us to take the unprecedented step of featuring her carvings for two months in a row. It is just that unique and just that good.
Paired at The Venue with Sidney for this Gallery is Mark Blaney, an artist who arrived in Bloomington and has made it his home. And it is a perfect fit. Mark’s paintings, pastels and drawings are a treat to the eye and manifest his appreciation of nature and people. Each piece has a back story that invites viewers to use their best thinking, to connect and derive the full import of the piece, or better still, to create their own narrative. A natural for Bloomington.
As is our custom for Gallery Walk, gourmet soup and other treats will be served. Our regular selection of fine art and gifts will also be on display for purchase.
