The Beauty of Indiana Folk Arts: Visiting Folk Artists Series–Marcos Bautista (Zapotec weaver)

Marcos Bautista is from Teotitlán del Valle in Oaxaca, Mexico, a community known for its Zapotec weaving. He grew up helping his family in their weaving business, often operating the standing loom. Bautista’s art combines his innovative designs with Zapotec patterns and techniques, which he’ll share through demonstrations and narrative stage discussions. The events will be free and open to the public, and are sponsored by Themester 2016: Beauty, an initiative of the IU College of Arts and Sciences.

Demonstrations: 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., and 2:30 to 4 p.m.
Discussion: 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

In 2014, the Shalom Center launched its strategic plan to end chronic and family homelessness by 2020! On Thursday, November 10, 2016, Shalom Community Center will host a community-wide event to share our progress, including up-to-the-minute updates on Crawford Part 2, the Friend’s Place & more.

In partnership with Pictura, we also are especially pleased to host an amazing photo gallery with images created by people experiencing homelessness in our community. Photos will be available for sale.

In the Navajo worldview beauty is a key concept. It extends into concepts of balance, harmony, and peace and is fundamental to understanding individual and community health. “A fairytale opera. A piece of history. A Bloomington premiere.”  Brundibár is presented by The Jewish Theatre of Bloomington and Stages Bloomington Theatre Company.

Hans Krása’s 1938 children’s opera written in German-occupied Prague is a delightful tale. Let us surprise you with the music, history, and stories behind this production that involves a Nazi transit camp, a children’s opera, and collaborations by award winning playwright Tony Kushner and author/illustrator Maurice Sendak.  Includes the curtain raiser, But The Giraffe by Tony Kushner.

Director, Pat Gleeson.  Music Director, Reuben Walker.  Vocal Coach, Susan Swaney.  Lighting Design, Mike Schwandt.  Art and set backdrops, Joe Lee.
