Bloomington Chamber Singers 50th Anniversary Gala

06:00 pm to 09:00 pm
Woolery Mill

The Bloomington Chamber Singers has been delighting local audiences and musicians since 1970. Using choral music to bring people together and explore complex topics, this auditioned choir of 50 singers has performed works from seven centuries and around the world under the direction of Dr. Gerald Sousa.

On September 26, 2019, BCS will kick off their 50th anniversary year with a gala fundraiser at the Woolery Mill at 6:00 pm. Bloom Magazine’s Malcolm Abrams will be the master of ceremonies, including a plethora of beautiful music featuring the choir and special guest Sylvia McNair. Celebrations of the choir’s half-century history will include reflections on alumni memories, concert programs, stories, and more.

In addition to music by Leonard Bernstein, Dolly Parton, Ola Gjeilo, Billy Joel, Johannes Brahms, and others, guests will enjoy gourmet hors d’oeuvres, beer and wine, a fun silent auction, and good company among friends and alumni from the past 50 years.

Tickets are $50 and tables for eight are $300. All funds raised will support BCS’s continuing work to provide opportunities for performance, education, and community service for the Bloomington area through the experience of wonderful choral music. This year’s season of concerts includes:
• Our Favorite Things on Saturday, November 16 at 7:30 pm at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church: a look back at some of the singers’ favorite songs from the choir’s five decades of repertoire, plus a few new favorites
• Considering Matthew Shepard on Saturday, May 2 at 7:30 pm at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater: a “fusion oratorio” by composer Craig Hella Johnson, reflecting on the life and legacy of Matthew Shepard, who was killed in a hate crime in 1998

In addition to the mainstage concert season, BCS provides community outreach, including two community sing-alongs of Handel’s Messiah (Part I on December 15; Part II on April 5), holiday caroling at the Bloomington Holiday Market and Meadowood Retirement Community, and free daytime pop-up performances for local elementary schools and community groups.

Cost: $50 per ticket; $600 for a table of 8
