The Beauty of Indiana Folk Arts: Visiting Folk Artists Series–Jan Boettcher (rosemaler) and Carol Powers (pysanky artist)

10:30 am to 04:00 pm
Mathers Museum of World Cultures
http://www.mathers.indiana.edu

Jan Boettcher practices rosemaling, a type of traditional decorative painting. Her desire to connect with her Norwegian ancestry led her to learn the art from her aunt Dorothy. Carol Powers learned the Ukrainian art of pysanky from her aunt. Using a wax-resist method, Powers draws a pattern onto an egg and then dyes it. Through ornate figures and designs, Boettcher’s painting and Powers’s decorative eggs express their ethnic identities and personal creativity. Their demonstrations and narrative stage discussions will be free and open to the public, and are sponsored by Themester 2016: Beauty, an initiative of the IU College of Arts and Sciences.

Demonstrations: 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., and 2:30 to 4 p.m.
Discussion: 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Red Cross Benefit featuring Matt Haeck

05:00 pm
The Players Pub
http://www.theplayerspub.com

Matt Haeck comes by his contradictions honestly. Scrappy with a genuine, lyrical voice, he sings truths hard-earned from struggles most men twice his age haven’t seen. With a silky Southern drawl, Haeck sings about depression, divorce, battling demons and vices. Through personal failures and a new life after deciding to change, Matt Haeck has found himself through a series of dark turns while searching for the light on his debut album. Late Bloomer was produced by David Mayfield and features appearances from Critter Fuqua (Old Crow Medicine Show), Paul Defiglia (The Avett Brothers), Caitlin Rose and Elizabeth Cook.

An Important Message from Bloom Magazine

For the past 14 years, we have been publishing Bloom, a free, bimonthly cultural and lifestyle magazine serving Bloomington, Indiana, and surrounding communities. We have four missions: to support local businesses, local charities, local arts, and diversity. We are an integral part of the fabric of this community.

Like so many small businesses (4 employees), we are facing huge challenges in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. We hope to be able to continue producing the magazine and our website, magbloom.com, but we need your help.

Please consider donating to our GoFundMe drive using the link below. Thank you!
