May Day Celebration (Photo Gallery)

•

The Bloomington Quarry Morris dancers celebrated spring’s arrival at noon on Thursday, May 1, with music and dancing on the Monroe County Courthouse lawn, an annual tradition for almost 40 years. After a performance involving bells, sticks, and handkerchiefs, May Day celebration attendees danced around a maypole, weaving their ribbons to create a multicolored braid. To conclude the celebration, eight-year-old Soraya drove a sword through a poppy seed cake, which is believed to bring good luck as well as serve as a symbol of fertility.
