See Her Run: Monroe County Women in Politics

10:00 am to 04:00 pm on Sep 30
Monroe County History Center, 202 E 6th Street
http://www.monroehistory.org

The Monroe County History Center commemorated the Women’s Suffrage Centennial in 2020 with a year-long exhibit highlighting the activities and contributions of local Monroe County women for local, state, and federal suffrage. As we turn the page to a new year, we want to continue to focus on the contributions of Monroe County women in local and state politics.

Through research gathered from Monroe County Election Records, the exhibit will begin with the first women to run for office, including Maude Luzadder who ran unsuccessfully for coroner in 1913. Our research has listed over 300 women who have won their races and many hundreds more who did not and we hope to share their stories with our visitors.

The exhibit features artifacts, documents, and photographs from the museum collection that trace the difficult defeats and historic victories of women in local politics. The exhibit will be accompanied by a series of virtual and in-person programs that encourage visitors to explore the experiences and significant contributions of women in local politics.
