Nature Hike at Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge and Columbia Mine Preserve

Join Sycamore Land Trust and Friends of Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge on a nature hike through the Columbia Mine Preserve led by wildlife biologist, David Howell, and Sycamore Land Trust Administrative Director, Susan Haislip. This nature walk will feature a stop at a newly constructed pier at Snakey Point Wetland, a discussion on an Eastern Box Turtle study at the Refuge, bird watching and grassland habitat management activities, including observing the results of a controlled burn and checking out a Barn Owl nesting box. The hike will start at Boyds Parking lot, just east of Snakey Point (see directions below). This hike is free to the public. Terrain is fairly flat. Dress for the weather, and bring your binoculars and/or camera.
The Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge and the Columbia Mine Preserve are located in Oakland City, Indiana and is easily accessible from I-69, IN 57 and IN 64. From the intersection of IN 57 and IN 64 head east on IN 64. Turn left on CR 1275 E and follow the signs to the Refuge. We will meet at the Boyd’s Woods parking lot which is labeled #1 on this map.If using GPS, start at the Refuge office: 510 ½ West Morton Street, Oakland City, IN 47660 , and proceed east on IN 64 as directed above.

Artist Demonstration: Wayne Campbell

Wayne Campbell (Oil, Acrylic & Pastel painting) began painting at a very young age and won his first competition in 1969 at the Scott County Fair at the age of twelve. Considering himself mostly self-taught, he has taken a variety of instructional workshops from many great Indiana artists. His accomplishments include winning many Grand champion, first place and People’s choice awards in a number of notable contests. Fast, loose plein air painting is his passion. Wayne became a member of the Brown County Art Guild in 2016. Wayne will take questions from the audience and host a live drawing from a model on Saturday, May 6 from 2:00-4:00 p.m.
