Getting to Know Your Local Cop Over a Cup of Coffee (or Juice)

Bloomington Police Department Deputy Chief Joe Qualters gets to know 2-year-old Thisbe Ellenwood at Coffee with a Cop. Photo by Jenn Hamm   BY PAUL BICKLEY It wasn’t a typical day at the library, and 2-year-old Thisbe Ellenwood stood shyly behind her mother until one police officer handed her a bottle of juice. Then she sat next to Bloomington Police Department (BPD) Deputy Chief Joe Qualters, attentive to his conversation with Mom. Thisbe and her mother were among several community members who attended the BPD’s latest Coffee with a Cop event, held October 7 at the Monroe County Public Library (MCPL). Chief Mike Diekhoff says holding Coffee with a Cop events in places like the library lets kids, and adults, [...]

Charlotte Hess: Fascinated by Life’s Patterns (Photo Gallery)

BY MOLLY BRUSH Artist Charlotte Hess has had a lifelong fascination with patterns. One of her earliest memories is of lying in her crib as a baby and tracing the pattern of a quilt with her finger. That enduring interest is evident in Hess’ solo exhibit, Community, on display at the Ivy Tech John Waldron Arts Center. The show features more than 30 framed oil pastel and chalk pastel paintings, as well as a number of unframed drawings. Hess’ works are all abstract pieces that explore patterns, textures, and round forms. Her most recent work focuses on the intersection of patterns in the human and natural worlds. She encourages viewers to approach abstract art with an open mind. “Open up […]

Tivoli Fashions and Jewelry: A Marriage of Apparel and Pearls

BY ROSIE PIGA PIZZO Like the classic women’s apparel it features, Tivoli Fashions has stood the test of time. Cheryl Nichoalds opened the shop in 1987, an original tenant in Fountain Square Mall. In 2003, her husband, David Nichoalds, knocked a hole in the wall of his wife’s store, making way for Tivoli Jewelry and ending his 30 years on the road selling fine jewels. Cheryl’s emphasis is on career, casual, and special occasion clothing, featuring brands such as GEIGER, Pendleton, and Eileen Fisher, in sizes 4–16. “I try not to buy things that are too trendy but are still influenced by what’s going on,” she says. David says the pearls he carries go with anything for sale in his […]

The Toy Chest: New Upscale Kids Store with a Heart

BY BARB BERGGOETZ Once an aspiring neuroscientist, Hilary Key chose instead to focus on what makes her most happy — children and philanthropy. The 26-year-old Martinsville, Indiana, native first took ownership of The Toy Chest in Nashville, Indiana, in July 2014. Now she’s opened a second toy store in the College Mall. She hadn’t planned to open another store, at least not so soon, until the general manager of College Mall approached her with an offer. She and her husband, Danny, a Nashville real estate agent, felt Bloomington would be a good market for a store focusing on educational and high-quality toys, games, and books. The 3,000-square-foot store, which opened in November, also offers science kits, arts and crafts, dolls, […]

It’s Costumes Galore for Sounds of South’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (Photo Gallery)

BY JEREMY SHERE When Sounds of South, the advanced choir group at Bloomington High School South, decided to stage a production of Beauty and the Beast in 2015, Director Gwen Witten Upchurch knew they would need to create more than 100 costumes. For help, she turned to local fiber artist Martina Celerin, who had designed some of the costumes and props for South’s production of Phantom of the Opera last year. “Because my art experiences have been on a much smaller scale, I thought it would be both a lot of fun and a chance to expand my art horizons,” says Celerin, a former plant biologist-turned-weaver who exhibits her work — wall hangings featuring three-dimensional weavings of plants, vegetables, and […]
