Billy Young: The Bicycle Man (video)

BY CARMEN SIERING Bloomington is a bike town and it’s common to see people riding bikes for recreation and sport, and even as a means of transportation. But for some folks, having a bike means a whole lot more. That’s something Billy Young understands. “When I was homeless, I had a couple of jobs and the biggest obstacle was getting to them,” Young says. “A bicycle can be an answer. Maybe just a stepping-stone answer, but an answer so that people can start to get back on their feet again.” In August, Young was presented with the Outstanding Resident Volunteer Award by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA) for the work he does in salvaging, restoring, and donating […]

WFIU Launches Second FM Station So Listeners Can Pick Talk or Music

BY BARB BERGGOETZ Choosing between classical music and quality news programming during the day is now easier for Bloomington listeners with the arrival of a new public radio channel — WFIU2. WFIU (103.7 FM) launched WFIU2 (101.9 FM), allowing Bloomington-area listeners to pick up FM radio programming that had previously been available only online or on HD radio for the last 10 years. The station also added the same programming at 100.1 FM in Seymour, Indiana. The move was made this fall to better serve WFIU’s two main audiences — classical music listeners and news followers — and to attract new listeners, says WFIU Operations Director John Bailey. Another reason for the additional station, he adds, is that despite talk […]

KMB Studio for Music and Movement: Raising the Barre at Fountain Square Mall

BY BARB BERGGOETZ Visitors to Fountain Square Mall might be surprised when they happen upon KMB Studio for Music and Movement. With ballet barres lining two long, mirrored walls and a professional dance floor, the exercise space is a bit different from the shops surrounding it. But since opening in mid-2015, owner Kelly McCormick Bangs, 29, has worked with people of all ages and abilities looking to work out with an experienced fitness instructor and professionally trained dancer. Bangs says her Fitness Barre class is the backbone of the studio. “I have a lot of runners, basketball players, gymnasts, and regular folks who take the barre class,” she says. “We’re looking to train people to get balanced functionality from […]

New Owners of Bakehouse Bring New Ideas, Menu, Hours

BY MOLLY BRUSH If you’ve visited the Bakehouse on Bloomington’s downtown Square in the past few months, you’ve probably noticed some changes. For one thing, it’s no longer the Scholars Inn Bakehouse — it’s now Black Canyon Bakehouse. It also has a new look and a new menu. The transformation is due to the efforts of the restaurant’s new owners, Ken Davenport and Garrett Hibiske. The two bought both the downtown Bakehouse and Scholars Inn Gourmet Café & Wine Bar from Lyle Feigenbaum in November 2015. Davenport and Hibiske, who also own Black Canyon Restaurant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, set out to bring a fresh approach to the Bakehouse, starting with improvements to the interior, including new paint and lighting. […]

be.CAUSE Bloomington Gallery & Studio: Where Art, Help, & Charity Are At Home

BY ERIN HOLLINDEN When Brianne Harness left Louisville, Kentucky, after a divorce and three bouts with cancer, she says she quickly found “Bloomington to be such a close knit community, people want to help you and champion you.” Because of that, she and her daughter, Paisley, now 6, quickly felt at home. Harness, founder of be.CAUSE Gallery and Studio, is repaying that kindness by donating a portion of the proceeds from her artwork, classes, and creative events to charity. Harness, 35, says a minimum of 10 percent of the profits from her studio, located at 314 E. Kirkwood, below The Pourhouse Cafe, goes to charities each month. In the early days she might not have turned a profit at all. […]
