“Secret Impressions: The Reproduction of Erotica Prior to the Camera” by The Kinsey Institute

01:30 pm to 05:00 pm
Indiana University, The Kinsey Institute, Morrison Hall 3rd Floor
http://kinseyinstitute.org

The Kinsey Institute art and library collections contain thousands of examples of erotic imagery produced over centuries by artists around the world. Secret Impressions presents a selection of lithographs, engravings, etchings and woodblock prints from the mid-19th century and earlier. These artworks from France, England, Italy, Germany, Holland, and Japan illustrate the means by which pornographic and erotic images were mass produced before the invention of the camera. Wealthy collectors could commission paintings, but others could purchase prints at a lower cost. Once photography was invented in the 1830s, it quickly became a popular medium for depictions of the nude figure, as well as erotic imagery. The first photographic process to become widespread was the daguerreotype, which produced a unique image. With the invention of a process that used a negative to make multiple photographs, the mass production of erotic images became possible. Hold That Pose features daguerreotypes, tintypes, albumen and gelatin silver prints, stereocards, and other examples of photographic processes that were used in the 19th century by professional photographers to produce and distribute erotic material.

The Kinsey Institute is open to visitors from 1:30 to 5:00 pm weekdays or at other times during office hours by appointment only. Admission is free. Due to adult content, visitors should be 18 years of age or older, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. To schedule a group guided tour of The Kinsey Institute, please call 812-855-7686.

Physicists from all over the world in search of the theoretical Higgs-Boson particle gathered together in Switzerland to recreate conditions immediately after the Big Bang, allowing us to move closer to an understanding of the origin of matter. Physicist-turned-filmmaker Mark Levinson was there with his cameras and he found a way of approaching the experiment as an epic adventure story. “The film is a tribute to the creativity and curiosity that drive scientific research.” — New York Times. (2K DCP presentation)

There will be a post-film panel discussion with IU scientists involved in the CERN project.

This event is sponsored by the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and the Department of Physics and is also part of IU Cinema’s Science on Screen series.

08:00 pm to 10:00 pm
Independantly produced - hosted by the Players Pub - 424 S. Walnut, Bloomington IN 47401
http://www.facebook.com/BloomingtonSongwriters

Cathi Norton has been singing Country, Rock, and Blues forever – and is one of the best Singers we’ve featured. Her voice is to music what velvet is to fabric – so lush, so smooth, and sooooo beautiful. Her songs are pretty darn good too! This evening, Cathi will be performing her own songs, alongside another Singer-Songwriter with an amazing voice – Cara Jean Marcy who will be visiting from Indianapolis. Cara Jean and Tim O’Malley (also on this evening’s program) have a won spots on the Blooming-Tunes Song Competition. Cathi Norton was one of the judges for the 2011 competition. . Tonight they all meet! Speaking of Tim O’Malley – he is one of the most popular Singer-Songwriters we book onto the Showcase – ALWAYS a big hit with our Audience. Soft spoken, but carries a real wallop with his Songwriting, Bluesy guitar work and fantastic lyrics . . . YEAH! Timmy O is back in the house! Also on this evening’s program is Rocker, Alternative/Contemporary writer – Russ Baum who is also visiting us from Indy. Russ is an UBER-talented Singer-Songwriter, and he brings his young musical attitude to the stage with him. He is modest, and anyone who attends a Showcase where Russ is on stage knows how much he loves what he does. He writes about his life, as well as other people’s lives with a fresh perspective. WE love him.
Don’t forget – NO COVER CHARGE – ALL AGES are welcomed.
