“Being Chased by a Bear, Hypervigilance and the Human Brain” a talk by Eiaine Guinn

05:30 pm to 07:00 pm
The Venue

In celebration of Mental Health Month at The Venue, on Tuesday, May 22nd, beginning at 5:30 p.m. we are pleased to host a talk by Elaine Guinn, former Executive Director of New Hope for Families in Bloomington. .
As the former executive director of a grassroots nonprofit organization in Bloomington, Indiana, Elaine Guinn gained community respect within Bloomington and beyond by developing an innovative approach to address family homelessness that lowered or removed the barriers most emergency shelters impose upon homeless families with children such as strict curfews, gender bias, marriage restrictions, and sobriety requirements. The shelter, New Hope for
Families, has been cited as a success within the Bloomington community as a now thriving $500k non-profit in an area of Southern Indiana currently struggling with the documented problem with homelessness, as college students and people of wealth push the local population out of homes and jobs.
After retiring from New Hope, Elaine has been freed to pursue her passion in regard to Early Childhood Trauma & Depression, to spread the word about how early childhood adversity and trauma exacts a toll in adult life. Guinn’s personal experience with childhood homelessness, growing up in poverty on the east side of Indianapolis, and later caring for her father, through his 22 years of homelessness, built the foundation on which she has developed programming, policies, and continued advocacy for the Housing First model of addressing homelessness.
Elaine now lives in her Spencer, Indiana, home with two amazing sons. She enjoys motorcycles, fly fishing, nature, camping, gardening, and planting seeds of learning wherever she may go.

An Important Message from Bloom Magazine

For the past 14 years, we have been publishing Bloom, a free, bimonthly cultural and lifestyle magazine serving Bloomington, Indiana, and surrounding communities. We have four missions: to support local businesses, local charities, local arts, and diversity. We are an integral part of the fabric of this community.

Like so many small businesses (4 employees), we are facing huge challenges in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. We hope to be able to continue producing the magazine and our website, magbloom.com, but we need your help.

Please consider donating to our GoFundMe drive using the link below. Thank you!
