Kinsey Institute Art Exhibits: “Creative Minds” and “Artistic Types: Test in Visual Art”

April 14 through September 12, 2014, Monday-Friday, 8AM-12PM and 1PM-5PM

Creative Minds features work produced by artists whose primary professions are as sex researchers, physicians, or scientists. This exhibition in the main gallery features drawings, glass art, photographs, sculpture and video by Robert Latou Dickinson, John Money, Jeffrey Rothenberg, Andreas Schneider, Jill Bolte Taylor, David Teplica, Leonore Tiefer and Rachel Liebert, and Martin Weinberg.
On display in the Corridor Gallery is Artistic Types: Text in Visual Art. This show offers a selection of artworks in which words or the alphabet play a significant role in the composition. The exhibition features a wide range of media, from vintage photographs to contemporary pieces by Herbert Ascherman, Michael Bennett, Filiz Cicek, Gatis Cirulis, John Gutoskey, Joe De Hoyos, Linda Hesh, Paul McCormick, James Murray, and Mark Addison Smith.

The Kinsey Institute Gallery is open 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm weekdays or by appointment Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to Noon. Admission is free. Due to adult content, visitors should be 18 years of age or older, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. Guided group tours of The Kinsey Institute may be scheduled by calling 812-855-7686. The Kinsey Institute is closed all IU holidays.

29th Annual Senior Games!

The 2014 Senior Games, sponsored by the Area 10 Agency on Aging, are just around the corner! More than 40 games are planned for this much anticipated and exciting annual event. Games September 3 – 15.

All active older adults (50 years & better!) from anywhere are invited to participate in friendly competition. Approximately 600 gold, silver and bronze medals are given to participants during the nearly three weeks of games.

The 2014 Senior Games are dedicated to the memory of Elton Rockwell & Ollie Waldon. Opening ceremonies will be at 9 a.m, Thursday, September 4, at Karst Farm Park. Park Games will follow the opening ceremonies, with a pitch-in luncheon immediately after the games.

Games take place at several locations, including five new venues! Games include bowling, a golf scramble, volley/bally ball, softball, table tennis, three-on-three basketball, eight-ball pool, shuffleboard, and numerous park games (crockers, croquet, football toss, softball pitch, horseshoes, Frisbee golf and bocce ball). New 2014 Games include swimming, putt-putt golf, and Badminton. $5 registration fee (no tee-shirt) or $10 registration fee (includes a 2014 Senior Games tee-shirt!). Please note: Additional charges for the golf scramble, putt-putt & bowling games. Additional tee-shirts available for $7.

Exhibits at the Mathers Museum

The Mathers Museum exhibition hall and Museum Store are open Tuesdays through Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Saturdays and Sundays, from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and closed all major holidays.

Free visitor parking is available by the Indiana Avenue lobby entrance. Metered parking is available at the McCalla School parking lot on the corner of Ninth Street and Indiana Avenue. The parking lot also has spaces designated for Indiana University C and E permits. During the weekends free parking is available on the surrounding streets.

“Açaí From Local to Global”
“Açaí From Local to Global” examines the transition of the açaí berry from a local Brazilian commodity to a global superfood. The exhibition is curated by Eduardo Brondizio and Andrea Siqueria, and sponsored by Themester 2014’s “Eat, Drink, Think: Food from Art to Science,” an initiative of the IU College of Arts and Sciences.
This exhibit runs until December 21.

“Food is Work: Tools and Traditions”

Explore the science of the very, very small! The interactive science exhibition brings to life nanoscale phenomena in nature, as well as nano technology and products. Some of the exhibition experiences are part of a national touring collection, which is making its first appearance in Indiana at WonderLab.

Nano Art
An exhibition of fourteen images that show the compelling beauty of biological and physical structures on the nano- and micro-size scale. WonderLab visitors will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite image for the People’s Choice Award.

“Living in Color”
Local artist, Avi Katz, has taken historic photos of Bloomington and turned them into colorized, painted, masterpieces. Runs through September 6.

“Auto Indiana”
From Elwood Haynes’s early machine to today’s numerous parts manufacturers, this exhibition examines the role of the automobile in the Hoosier State. Indiana was one of the leaders in automobile production until the 1930’s when Detroit emerged as the nation’s technological and industrial giant. Come see the Howe car, Monroe County’s first automobile, graciously on loan from the Mathers Museum of World Cultures. Runs through December 31.

The History Center is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10am-4pm.

“Color Forms of Our Universe” by Martha Kaplan

”The content of color paints our days and nights. We prefer certain colors and color combinations, Colors have dispositions indicative of regions, origins, harmonics.” The 32 pieces of fine contemporary art, created by Martha Kaplan, are from three different series. The ‘New Kachinas’ are graphite and colored pencils and are a leap of faith from the side of the mind that is new territory. ‘Large Lace Paperworks’ are mixed media drawings setting out to restructure the disparities of the burdens of the world and ‘Pastels’ are the bridge where conscious and unconscious space can meet.

About: The purpose of this monthly group is to provide a safe space for family or friends caring for loved ones to share and connect with other caregivers. Group sessions are drop-in, which means participants may arrive late or leave early in order to better accommodate varying schedules. Each member will have a chance to share, in a safe and confidential environment, uninterrupted, about anything. After sharing each member will have the option to receive feedback from group members if they wish. Respite care for your loved one is available at the Endwright Center during support group, provided by professionals from Home Instead Senior Care. Your loved one can engage in activities if they wish, and Home Instead will provide beverages and meals for both caregivers and their loved one. When possible, we appreciate advance notice if respite care is requested. Please call the Center at 812-876-3383, ext 582 to request respite services during the meeting.

About the Facilitator: Liz Jones, MSW is the Information & Referral Manager at Area 10 Agency on Aging. Her role as group facilitator is to maintain group safety, observe time so all may share, and to link group members with relevant resources.
