Archaeology Month Lecture—How Beans (Phaseolus Vulgaris) Got to Angel Mounds: Implications for Late Prehistoric Migrations and Group Interactions Across North America

12:00 pm to 01:00 pm
Mathers Museum of World Cultures/Glenn Black Laboratory of Archaeology, 416 North Indiana Avenue
http://www.mathers.indiana.edu

Mathers Museum/Glenn Black Laboratory Associate Director Bill Monaghan will speak on direct dating of domesticated plants—the only way to provide unequivocal, base-line data about when those plants were incorporated into local subsistence strategies. By mapping the age of first appearance of domesticated common beans (Phaseolus Vulgaris) across eastern North America, the routes, magnitude, and mechanisms of their adoption by various groups can be measured. This pathway may also map group interactions and show the presence of important cultural or technological barriers. In addition, these data may also be used to trace the origin and route of the “three sisters” (corn, beans, and squash) planting system, which is often considered the best example of sustainable agriculture in America.

‘Axe of Vengeance: Ghanaian Film Posters and Film Viewing Culture’ at the Grunwald Gallery

12:00 pm to 04:00 pm
Grunwald Gallery of Art (1201 E. 7th St.)
http://tinyurl.com/bw5cvno

The Grunwald Gallery of Art is pleased to announce “Axe of Vengeance: Ghanaian Film Posters and Film Viewing Culture.” This exhibition will open to the public with a gallery talk and reception Friday, August 24, 5-8 pm and be on view during regular gallery hours through Saturday, September 15, 2012. Two cinematic features will be on view at the IU Cinema, Black is Black: Mama Mia, Sunday, September 9, at 6:30 pm and Oganigwe, Saturday, September 15, 9:30 pm.

“Axe of Vengeance: Ghanaian Film Posters and Film Viewing Culture” is an exhibition of large-scale posters hand painted on flour sacks to advertise Hollywood, Bollywood, Kung Fu, Nollywood and Ghanaian films circulating in Ghana during the 1980s and 1990s. The posters and the venues where they were shown have become obsolete, as viewing has shifted from makeshift theaters to in home film viewing. The exhibit will feature a recreation of the traditional cinematic space, reproducing key aspects of the original viewing experience where visitors can view the films Isakaba Boys, Secret Adventure, The Snake Girl, and Oganigwe.
