Fall Ballet: ‘Light and Shade’ at the Musical Arts Center

The IU Opera and Ballet Theater presents their fall ballet Light and Shade, which features three trend-setting styles of dance in one program: “Sweet Fields,” choreographed by Twyla Tharp and featuring early American shape note and Shaker hymns; “Eight Easy Pieces” and “Eight More” by Peter Martins, featuring the work of Stravinsky, and “Appalachian Spring”, by Martha Graham, with songs sung by Aaron Copland.

Chainsaw Seminar with Arborist Mark Adams

Sycamore Land Trust (SLT) will offer two seminars focusing on proper chainsaw use and tree felling. The first session will be held indoors and focus on proper chainsaw use and safety, while the second session will include discussions and demonstrations of more advanced chainsaw techniques in the field. Sessions will be led by seasoned arborist and SLT board member Mark Adams. Adams has been involved with arboriculture for over 20 years, and is an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist. He has served as a member of the Bloomington Tree Commission, the Tree Advisory Board to Purdue University, and has sat on the Board of Directors for the Indiana Arborist Association. An expert in advanced climbing, technical rigging, and tree risk assessment, Adams has conducted workshops and seminars across the country.

29th Annual Red Cross Book Fair

This year’s Red Cross Book Fair will be held September 27th through October 2nd at the Monroe County Fairgrounds. Over 100,000 gently used books, CDs, DVDs, videos, cassettes, games, puzzles and more will be on sale at bargain prices. For the best selection, plan to attend opening day on Thursday, September 27th, when admission is $10. Admission is free during the rest of the book fair. On Friday and Saturday we’ll be giving “book bucks” good for $1 off any merchandise purchase to anyone who brings non-perishable food to help Hoosier Hills Food Bank. On Sunday we celebrate military families, and all books are half price & military families get free goodie bags. Monday is our popular bag-it day. Exhibit: ‘WOVEN and CONSTRUCTED: Traditional African Textiles and Baskets’

This special Lotus exhibit at the Ivy Tech John Waldron Arts Center is a selection of traditional African fiber-art objects from the extensive collection of artist and IU Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts William Itter. These stunning woven textiles and baskets come from Sierra Leone, Mali, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, and other areas of sub-Saharan Africa. Sponsored by IU African Studies Program and IU Emeriti House.

Runs from September 7 through 30. A gallery talk by Prof. Itter will be held on September 13 at 5:30 pm, followed by a reception.

Hoosiers Outrun Cancer has raised more than $2 million in support of the cancer center over the past 13 years, but none of that support would have been possible without the participation over 50,000 volunteers, runners, walkers, team members and cancer survivors. Race sponsors Bloomington Hospital Foundation and IU Athletics expect more than 5,000 for this year’s event.

You can walk, run, participate in spirit, or as a team at this fun community event. The race features a 1-mile family walk, 1-mile competitive kids’ run and awards, and a 5K run and awards. There are many activities for the whole family including Silly Safaris with live animals, a parachute, magician, face painting, inflatables, a create-a-card for cancer patients, games, healthy snacks, and more!

This exhibit on simple machines will remain at WonderLab from June 05 until September 23.
