The Paintings of Ekphrasis III at The Venue

06:00 pm to 07:00 pm
The Venue Fine Art & Gifts

Once a year at The Venue we celebrate Ekphrasis, and this year we invite you to join us this Friday at 6:00 p.m. for a viewing of the Paintings of The Exphrasis III.
A Greek tradition, Ekphrasis is the literary description of, or commentary on, a visual work of art. For our event we have invited some of our community’s most recognized painters to submit an evocative painting. We then invited some of the area’s most prolific poets to select one of those paintings to be the inspiration for an original poem.
Paired poets and painters will present their paintings, read their poems, and describe their inspirational and creative processes. The Paintings of Ekphrasis are an experience all their own, independent of their poems, and we invite you to share in their inspirational energy. They are also for sale, at reasonable prices.

Moonlight and Magnolias – A Comedy Play

07:30 pm
Brown County Playhouse
http://www.browncountyplayhouse.org

Moonlight and Magnolias is a clever comedy play about the writers of the movie “Gone With the Wind”. The producer has had enough of delays – he locks his top team away until they finish the script, with hilarious results. The play is based on a legendary Hollywood incident that also light-heartedly explores the struggle between artists’ morals and the film industry’s prejudices. Includes some old-fashioned swearing. Directed by Gerry Pauwels.

WFIU’s An Evening with Steve Inskeep

08:00 pm
Buskirk-Chumley Theater
http://indianapublicmedia.org/events/steve-inskeep/

Join WFIU on September 15th for an evening with Steve Inskeep! A native of Carmel, Indiana, Inskeep is a graduate of Morehead State University in Kentucky. He is host of NPR’s Morning Edition, as well as NPR’s morning news podcast Up First, with Rachel Martin and David Greene.

Known for posing probing questions to everyone from presidents to warlords to musicians, Inskeep has a passion for stories of the less famous—like an American soldier who lost both feet in Afghanistan, or an Ethiopian woman’s extraordinary journey to the United States.

Since joining Morning Edition in 2004, Inskeep has hosted the program from New Orleans, Detroit, Karachi, Cairo, Houston, and Tehran; investigated Iraqi police in Baghdad; and received a 2006 Robert F. Kennedy journalism award for “The Price of African Oil” on conflict in Nigeria. In 2012, he traveled 2,700 miles across North Africa in the wake of the Arab Spring. In 2013, he reported from war-torn Syria, and on Iran’s historic election. In 2014, he drove with colleagues 2,428 miles along the entire U.S.–Mexico border; the resulting radio series, “Borderland,” won widespread attention, as did the acclaimed NPR online magazine of the same name.

Doors will open for this reserved seating event at 7:30 p.m. The event will include a video component and Q&A session and is expected to last two hours.

The Odd Couple (female version)

07:00 pm to 09:00 pm
Ivy Tech John Waldron Arts Center Firebay
http://www.mcct.yapsody.com

Monroe County Civic Theater presents The Odd Couple (female version)

It’s girls’ night at Olive Madison’s house. Olive is a messy, scatter-brained, cluttered news producer living in New York in the 80’s. When her friends Mickey, Vera, Sylvie and Renee come over for a game of Trivial Pursuit, they quickly realize someone is missing: Florence Unger, a neurotic, neat freak, bookkeeper turned stay-at-home mother.

We find out Florence’s husband has had it with her obsessive ways and kicked her out. Olive opens up her home for her friend, and what happens next is hilarious, heartwarming, and heart-breaking. Can two opposite people live together without killing each other? Will all of the rest of their friendship be ruined in the process? And what happens when the fiery Costazuela brothers try and go on a date with Olive & Florence?

Neil Simon’s adaptation of his Odd Couple for a mostly female cast is in turns touching, challenging and laugh out loud funny. Enjoy!
