Mathers Museum Symposium-Stoking the Fire: A Contemporary Pottery Symposium

10:00 am to 06:00 pm
Mathers Museum of World Cultures, 416 N Indiana Ave
http://www.mathers.indiana.edu

Stoking the Fire: A Contemporary Pottery Symposium seeks to promote interdisciplinary conversations about clay as a medium and the significant human connections which are made via the process of making pots. This one-day symposium will be presented in conjunction with the exhibit “Melted Ash: Michiana Wood Fired Pottery.” While the exhibit introduces visitors to the process of making wood fired pottery and highlights a talented group of potters in the Midwest, additional aspects of contemporary pottery will be explored in further depth within the symposium. Please pre-register for the symposium by emailing [email protected].

Call for Papers: Papers addressing apprenticeship and other modes of learning, international interactions, or aspects of community and collaboration in the world of pottery are particularly encouraged. Though papers related to wood firing are preferred, submissions from scholars whose research focuses on other forms of pottery are also welcome. Presentations will be 15 or 30 minutes and should include time for questions and answers. A computer (PC) and projector will be available for supporting visuals. Longer time slots for panels or joint presentations may be available.

Abstracts should be between 200-300 words, and the complete submission should also include the paper title, preferred format (15 or 30 minutes), author’s name, affiliation (if applicable), address, telephone number, email address, and a brief 100-word biography. To submit abstracts and supporting information, or for additional information, please contact Meredith McGriff at [email protected]. Abstracts must be submitted no later than September 22, 2013. Those accepted will be notified in early October.
