Upland Plein Air Artists exhibit during Monroe County Barn Tour

09:00 am to 05:00 pm
Whippoorwill Hill
http://www.indianabarns.org

The Upland Plein Air Painters (UP) are thrilled to create a special painting exhibition for the Monroe County Barn Tour. The exhibition will feature a wide array of rural-themed paintings by artists who work in watercolor, oil, pastel, and other medium. Barns are a favorite theme of this artist group, and have become popular destinations for their weekly painting trips. The exhibition will be held during the tour hours in one of the historic barns at Whippoorwill Hill Farm.

In addition, artists from UP and the Bloomington Watercolor Society (BWS) will be painting at the Whippoorwill Hill location. This “paint out” will occur during the tour hours. Please stop in to visit this unique exhibit and see the artists at work.

“The barn tour is a perfect partner for Upland Plein Air Painters” says Kristen Stamper, the group’s founder, “as every week we usually visit a rural destination to paint, and old farm buildings are a preferred subject. In the two years we have been painting together, more than 30 of our paint outs have been at rural locations throughout Monroe County. Upland Plein Air Painters is part of the Bloomington Watercolor Society.”

The Monroe County Barn Tour will be a self-guided tour to benefit the Indiana Barn Foundation. For more information and tickets, visit the Foundation website. UP welcomes artists working in any medium to visit as a guest or join by becoming a member of BWS. The group meets to paint outside at various locations from April to November. For more information contact them at [email protected] or visit bloomingtonwatercolor.org

The term “plein air” refers to painting outside from life. It was first coined to describe the French Impressionist’s unique approach. The idea of painting outside grew in popularity in the United States as American artists who had trained in France returned. Art colonies sprung up along the East Coast, in Indiana, California, and other locales. Today, plein air groups are gaining popularity across the country.

Cost: $10 advance, $15 day of tour, 15 years old and younger free
