Rhiannon Giddens

08:00 pm
Buskirk-Chumley Theater

The Buskirk-Chumley Theater is proud to present Rhiannon Giddens on Monday, October 12, 2015. Tickets are $25-$35 and will be available to BCT donors on June 10th. Tickets will go on sale to the public at 11am on June 15 and can be purchased at buskirkchumley.org, at 812-323-3020, or at the BCT Box Office and Downtown Visitors Center at 114 E. Kirkwood Ave.

Rhiannon Giddens, best known as a member of the Grammy–winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, released her debut solo, Tomorrow Is My Turn, earlier this year. This album, produced by T Bone Burnett, features a broad range of songs from genres as diverse as gospel, jazz, blues, and country, including works made famous by Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, Odetta, and Nina Simone.

As a founding member of The Carolina Chocolate Drops, Giddens helped prove that old-time, fiddle and banjo-based music could be a living, breathing, ever-evolving sound. Starting with material culled from the Piedmont region of the Carolinas, the group sought to highlight the central role African Americans have played in shaping our nation’s popular music from its beginnings. Their repertoire incorporates blues, jazz and folk balladry alongside crackling string-band tunes and overlaps with Giddens’ solo work.

Giddens was also recently invited to participate in another T Bone Burnett project, Lost On The River, which was written and performed in creative collaboration by Elvis Costello, Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Jim James (My Morning Jacket), and Marcus Mumford (Mumford & Sons). The artists and Burnett gathered in Capitol Studios in March 2014 to write and create music for a treasure trove of recently discovered lyrics handwritten by Bob Dylan in 1967.

Cathi Norton, Warren Atwell (Irish), Johnny Bennett, Greg Mahan TONIGHT! Bloomington Songwriter Showcase

8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The Players Pub - 424 S. Walnut St., Bloomington IN 47401
http://facebook.com/BloomingtonSongwriters

Cathi Norton (facebook.com/cathi.norton) has one of the most beautiful voices you’ll ever hear . . . anywhere. She’s a Blues gal by nature, but has written some pretty cool Country and Americana songs as well. After years of working with bands and vocal groups – she and hubby Stuart Norton are working together as they travel to and from the East Coast – and they sound marvelous! Also on stage this evening is Irish Singer-Songwriter – Warren Atwell (WarrenAtwell.com). This will be his first appearance with us – but we can’t get enough of those Irish accents and Folk style of music. Growing up in Richhill, Northern Ireland, Warren first ventured into songwriting and home recording at the age of 15 whilst leading the worship team at his local church. After writing and producing a number of band releases in his modest home studio, he headed to Queens University to hone his production skills in 2007, studying Music Technology and working on his debut solo effort, “Chapter One,” which was released in September 2008. Johnny Bennett (Johnny-Bennett.com) is back in town!! Johnny Bennett splits his time between Bloomington and Los Angeles, California. Born in Muncie, Indiana – Johnny knew fairly early on he was destined to be in music, and that’s exactly what he’s doing. He’s here now and this Rockin’ Folk/Jazz Singer-Songwriter always is a crowd pleaser. We’ve missed him and are thrilled to have him back on our stage! One of our Audience faves – Greg Mahan (GregMahan.com) – finger pickin’ good guy with some high energy and GREAT songs – will round out the fourth Feature Songwriter spot this evening. Visiting us from the Cincinnati, Ohio, area – we appreciate it every time he makes the drive north to share his amazing songs with us. If you haven’t seen Greg Mahan yet – you really should get out Monday evening and do that!
Don’t forget – NO COVER CHARGE and ALL ages are welcomed.
