Puzzles, Trivia, and Games for Seniors!

01:00 pm to 02:00 pm
The Endwright Center

Memories can get fuzzy as we age, but it doesn’t have to be that way! Regularly challenging ourselves with fun mental exercises keeps our minds running on all four cylinders. In fact, adults who frequently engage in mentally stimulating activities are 63% less likely to develop dementia than those who rarely do such activities (according to a New England Journal of Medicine study). Stacey Goffinet will lead participants in playing trivia games, solving puzzles and other fun activities to maintain a sharp focus and, better memory retention. Games and puzzles are among the best ways to maintain active and productive use of all our mental faculties. Eating healthy foods and exercise can also significantly boost our brain power!

Refreshments will be provided by Comfort Keepers. New players are always welcome! Sponsored by Area 10 Agency on Aging and Comfort Keepers. For more information: call the center at 876-3383 ex. 515.

MarchFourth!

08:00 pm
Buskirk-Chumley Theater
http://buskirkchumley.org/

With a rallying cry of “JOY NOW!” MarchFourth! (M4 for short) throws itself and the audience into a swirling volcano of high-energy music and spectacle. What began as a Fat Tuesday party on March 4, 2003 in Portland, Oregon has become one of the nation’s best live touring acts. They bring an energy and style that takes the live concert experience to a new level of fun, turning unsuspecting concert-goers into fans for life and transforming ordinary events into joyous occasions.

Aside from their one-of-a-kind upcycled vintage marching band uniforms, their 5-piece percussion corps and the 7-part brass section, MarchFourth! is far from a “marching band” in any traditional sense. Their original music is anchored by funky electric bass and has been evolving into a rocking guitar and vocal-driven journey from the swamps of Louisiana to the gypsy camps of eastern Europe to the African jungle by way of Brazil, echoing the deepest grooves of American funk, rock, and jazz. That’s all boiled together and framed in cinematic fashion by high-stepping stilt-acrobatics and dazzling dancers. This band is real people making music and art in real time—and every show is different.

Join MarchFourth! at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater for a night full of excitement—exclamation point included.

About the Ensemble

“Tembembe is the name of a river, taking form from several tributaries, weaving its way through our rugged Cuernavaca landscapes, and running by our rehearsal venue.

“Thus flows our culture, thus flows our work…”

The vision of Tembembe (Ensamble continuo) is to seek out, recreate, and share what intimately connects Baroque music with traditional music, both Mexican-specific and Latin American. They do this by breaking down historical and imaginary boundaries that have come to separate these worlds over time, thus bringing to bare new possibilities of appreciation, comprehension, and truly novel interpretation of this flourishing music.

Tembembe has tasked itself with bringing together the music of the Hispanic Baroque guitar and the music of Mexican and Latin American contemporary culture. The group explores the similarities between the instruments and the practices of each of these traditions, presenting all aspects of performance including music, song, and dance that bring alive the festive spirits of both the Hispanic fandango of the 17th century and contemporary traditional fandango.

Members of Tembembe are graduates of the National University (UNAM) in Mexico City, as well as having completed their studies in other music institutions in Mexico, Colombia, France, and the United States. Today they teach at the UNAM and the Centro Ollin Yoliztli. They organize workshops aimed at reconstructing and interpreting traditional instruments, as well as fandango jam sessions in the Morelos state communities. The Ensemble has been featured at numerous venues in Mexico, the Americas, Europe and Asia. They have recorded for UDC (Mexico), Sony BMG Deutsche harmonia mundi (Germany), and AliaVox (Spain).
