Join United Way for a monthly breakfast speaker series to explore issues which impact our community, friends, and neighbors.

On Thursday, March 12, the topic, “Creating a More Brain Injury-Friendly Community” will be explored. Brain injury is more common than people realize and is one of the most “invisible” disabilities in our communities. Brain injury can include traumatic brain injuries, stroke, injury due to loss of oxygen, infections, and a variety of other events. It can cause an array of cognitive, emotional, and physical challenges that can derail careers, stress individuals and their families, and without appropriate supports and treatment, can lead to a host of other issues. Join guest speakers Jean Capler, Local Support Network Leader for the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana Resource Facilitation Program; Rebecca Eberle, clinical professor with IU Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences; and three individuals living with a brain injury to discuss how we can create a more brain injury-friendly community. Learn about brain injury, what it’s like living with one, what helps, and how our community can better support our neighbors and friends who have experienced a brain injury.

Alongside friends, neighbors, nonprofits and community partners, learn more about issues that directly or indirectly affect everyone in our area. Attendees will have the opportunity to deepen their awareness about someone else’s reality while learning about the challenges, innovations, collaborations and resources available through area nonprofits, and how to get more involved in making a difference. Guest are invited to come with questions for the speakers or just listen and learn.

Wake Up! with United Way is hosted by United Way of Monroe County and presenting partners Indiana University’s Political and Civic Engagement program and the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce.

The $10 ticket cost includes breakfast and coffee catered by Bloomington Bagel Company. All remaining proceeds benefit United Way of Monroe County.
