Angel B’s A Galleria of Cakes

Bakery, Sweets

From the incredibly decadent flourless chocolate cake to a vanilla sponge cake layered with chantilly cream and glossy strawberries, Angel B’s creates beautiful cakes for any sweet tooth. Two bite tarts and cheesecakes are nice if you’re not in the market for a full size cake. Slices of apple tart are lovely, too. Dusted with cinnamon and prettily layered on tender pastry, the thin slices of granny smith apples retain their crunch and tartness. Fruit tarts are gorgeous and taste as good as they look. Prices: Petite sweets $1.50-3, pastries and cinnamon rolls $2-3, cupcakes $1.75 apiece, $18 per dozen Hours: Mon-Fri 7:30 am-5:30 pm Sat 8 am-3 pm. The stars at this café, bakery, and coffee shop are owner Erika Yochum’s handmade tamales—packets of masa and fillings, wrapped in cornhusks and steamed. Varieties range from traditional to gourmet (picture sweet potato and duck). But salads and sandwiches at lunchtime and more elaborate dinner entrees (perhaps a half roast chicken with shiitake butter, local pork chop with manchego risotto, or goat cheese arugula ravioli with lemon basil pesto) revolve around seasonal, organic ingredients that come from Yochum’s family farm in Brown County and other Indiana farms. Gorgeous homemade pies, desserts, breakfast pastries, and cookies are top notch. Prices: Entrées $5-14, tamales $5-8, cookies $2, pastries $3-7.50 Hours: Mon-Wed 7 am-9 pm Th-Fri 7 am-10 pm Sat 8 am-10 pm Sun 9 am-2 pm Bar: Beer, wine Credit Cards: Visa, MC, Disc. Outdoor Seating: Yes

Sweet breads from across the globe are the specialty at this bakery/café. Try the brioche, a French bread served plain, topped with berries, or filled with chocolate. On weekends, look for challah and babka, both Jewish breads, and pandesel, a Filipino roll. For lunch, there are sandwiches on focaccia, a flat Italian bread, with a variety of spreads, deli meats, and cheeses. Grab-and-go or linger at a table with organic coffee and tea. Prices: Individual bread and pastries $3-3.50, loaves $8, focaccia sandwiches $7-8 Hours: Tu-Fri 7 am-6 pm Sat 7 am-4 pm Sun 9 am-4 pm. Closed Mon Bar: No Credit Cards: Visa, MC, AMEX, Disc.
