On Tuesday, September 1, beginning at 5:30 p.m., The Venue Fine Art & Gifts will host a book signing and talk by Dr. David Hertz, author of “Eugenio Montale, The Fascist Storm and the Jewish Sunflower.”
Dr. Hertz is the chairman of the comparative literature department of Indiana University. This extraordinary scholar and teacher holds a Ph.D. from NYU, has authored several books, and is recognized as an outstanding instructor at Indiana University. He has served on the Board of Directors of the National Endowment for The Humanities since 2002, a Presidential Appointment. Dr. Hertz has written on modern poetry, music, drama, and architectural history. He is also a composer and pianist.
In his most recent book, “The Fascist Storm and the Jewish Sunflower,” Hertz analyzes the life and works of Eugenio Montale, one of Italy’s and the world’s great romantic modern poets, from a unique perspective. In Mussolini’s fascist anti-Semitic Italy, Montale fell in love with Irma Brandeis, a glamorous and beautiful Dante scholar and an American Jew. Their necessarily secret romance would have literary repercussions that extended throughout the poet’s career: Montale’s works abound with secret codes that speak to a lost lover and muse. Dr. Hertz’s book is the first to completely unlock the cryptic thematic link that connects many of Montale’s most important poems.
Light refreshments will be served. You can visit the following link for free parking options near The Venue: bloomington.in.gov/parksmart.
